OWNING A CAFE | Why I’ve been gone, traveling as a business owner, saying bye to our manager 😢😭
Owning a café is a blend of rewarding experiences and demanding challenges, offering a unique perspective on small business life. The daily routine involves more than just serving coffee; it includes building a community, managing staff, and ensuring every customer leaves satisfied. For Shann and Sang, owners of Harlem Java House in Harlem, Georgia, these aspects define their roles and bring both joy and stress. One of the greatest perks of owning a café is the opportunity to create a welcoming environment where relationships are built and stories are shared. The sense of community that develops within the walls of a small-town coffee shop is incomparable. Customers often become friends, and regulars feel like family. This connection is a significant reward, making the hard work worthwhile.
However, owning a small business is not without its challenges. One of the biggest disadvantages is the difficulty of taking personal time off. The business depends heavily on the owners, making it hard to travel or take breaks. Even short trips require meticulous planning and trusted staff to keep things running smoothly in their absence. When health issues arise, the pressure increases exponentially. Balancing personal well-being with business demands can be a tightrope walk, often leading to exhaustion and stress. Despite these hurdles, the sense of accomplishment in running a small business is profound. The ability to adapt, grow, and thrive under pressure is a testament to the resilience and dedication required of café owners. Every challenge faced and every milestone achieved is a step toward building a lasting legacy in the community.

    Sugarologie on here has a ton of recipes for whipped cream and frostings, and she’s great at explaining why ingredients give certain effects! She even did a test on what will make whipped cream stay the longest

      Wrapping in plastic elongates the shelf life of the food (to avoid food waste) as well as keep everything more sanitary! Thank you!

      Thanks so much! To give some insight re wrapping it in plastic: it drastically elongates the food’s shelf life which prevents us from making more food waste! It also promotes food safety for health reasons :-)

    You asked about stabilizing whipped cream? SugarSpunRun has a great video about using gelatin as the basis for whipped cream. Many folks simply use instant pudding. Cream cheese can be added too. I prefer gelatin because it doesn’t change the flavor of the cream, but for your purposes, instant pudding is probably easiest.

      I worked here as a barista and was blessed to take over! I think that is the best route to take if you want to own your own cafe someday. I would imagine starting from scratch would be extra difficult! 😣

    I am loving your videos! Amazing all the hard work that goes into this wonderful place! I have 4 wonderful kiddos and when I get up early and bake muffins for them or something I tend to do it with as little light as possible too. It does feel peaceful.🌿
